The Gyroball

The Gyroball
There's a great article here by Yahoo! Sports columnist Jeff Passan about the gyroball myth. He talks about how Matsuzaka supposedly throws one, but no one has actually seen the pitch. Sounds like a load of you know what if you ask me.

Nice find. Daisuke actually has the gyroball attribute in the Pawapuro videogames. Pretty cool.

This sounds like wrist spin. They use it in cricket. It's not a fast bowler's tool but a specialist slow bowler's ball. It is very difficult to play but difficult to do well.

So you've been reading on cricket now, have you? Actually wrist spin is a generic term. And there are different types of deliveries, including the flipper, the zooter, the wrong 'un, etc.

I've been playing cricket for longer than baseball. You're right, of course, but most of our baseball loving friends wouldn't know the difference between the different types.

Wow neat. It would make sense to incorporate something from cricket if it can be an advantage.

Interesting. I must admit I have stronger cricket roots than baseball. I grew up in Bankstown, home of the Waugh brothers. Used to go down to Bankstown Oval as a kid and watch Lennie Pascoe and Jeff Thomson play grade cricket before they became famous. Had to feel sorry for the opposing batsmen, though, with those two tearing in from either end!

I wasn't much good as a player, but my cousin played for the ACT, and my dad was a mean leg spin bowler in his day. He would understand the mechanics involved in the gyroball!

I don't remember Pascoe much, but I do remember Thomson, especially when he partnered Lillee. Lillee was an awesome bowler who I always enjoyed watching.

Though he doesn't have it anymore, in the newest version of Pawapuro. But Watanabe Shunsuke's had it for the past two version, I think. Probably to make his straights stronger than 138km/h.
