Where's Shane Spencer (Again)?
What is the latest on Shane Spencer? Is he still playing for the Tigers?

He's basically warming the bench. He will be gone at the end of the season though.

He at least had one at-bat in Wednesday's game, but popped up. I was away for the summer, but didn't see him in any box scores. Did Okada just give up on him? It's a shame we never got to see what he would have done in a full season here. Then again, it might not have been that impressive.

Anyone know Sheets' status for next year?

Spencer was competing for an over-filled right field position. He was given a second chance after an undistinguished first season and really needed to have a massive season. He didn't and has mostly been used as a pinch hitter without much success.

Sheets will be asked back unless he does something spectacularly bad.

An ignominious end to a forgettable player.

With first-choice-RF Osamu Hamanaka batting .296 with 63 RBIs and 17 HRs, and up-and-comer Lin Weizhu managing .270, 10 RBIs, and 4 HRs in what amounts to a pinch-hitting role, there's been little room for Spencer in the starting line-up.

I don't think this is a bad thing. Everyone on the team has a role, and it seems to me that Spencer's role was never to be the star or starting right fielder. It always appeared to me that Spencer was brought in to keep the top guys on their toes and do some pinch hitting. He's done this well, so I think the whole thing's a good deal.

[Note from Editor: Lin's name updated based on Hanshin's profile page. Thanks for the tip.]

A bit off the topic, but back to Sheets. Did he get injured this week? He's been out of the lineup for a couple games.

Yeah, something happened to Sheets that made him day-to-day (came back on Saturday).

And Spencer pinch-hit in the 9th inning of Saturday's game. He was "this close" to ending Yamamoto's no-hitter, but Hidenori made the catch at the wall.

Something tells me I'll be watching Shane Spencer play for the Somerset Patriots in the Atlantic League next year. He'd be very popular, since the Yankees' fans are still very fond of him, but Indy League money is nothing like Central League money. However, Rickey Henderson, Ruben Sierra, and Tim Raines used the Atlantic League to get back into The Show, so, this may be Shane's last opportunity to stay in the game.

I'm sure Shane will get a Spring Training invite next year. He would be a good fit with the Red Sox to play in a RF platoon with Trot Nixon. I still believe that Shane would have been very good with Hanshin if they just put him in the lineup everyday and let him get in a groove. He's always been a streaky hitter who can carry a team when he's hot.

Spencer is doing very well with Hanshin right now. First-choice right-fielder Hamanaka knows that, with the likes of Spencer and Lin ready to replace him at any time, he's got to be at the top of his game.

I don't think Spencer was ever brought to Hanshin to be the no. 1 pick in right field, but he has his role, and he's performing it well. Because Spencer's cog in the Hanshin engine is working properly, the Tigers are now able to make a last desperate effort to nab the title from Chunichi.

Streaky hitters, especially right handers, do not make good platoon players. With limited at bats, you have to be able to produce even if you have not played for a few days. A righty in a platoon sometimes does not play for several days, because there are not that many lefty starting pitchers, some teams don't even have a lefty in their rotation. It takes someone with real mental toughness and daily discipline to be a good righty hitter in a platoon situation.

Fellas, you have to do better than Shane Spencer. Come on now, though a proficient ballplayer, he's not that good. He gets far too much attention on this board.

They platooned him with Hiyama, and Spencer just didn't plain out produce. Again, this year he didn't either. If you don't produce, why should Okada trot Spencer out there? Though like Kranepool-san said, Spencer gets way too much attention on these boards. It's almost old hearing about Spencer all the time.
