Hoshino's Thinking Ahead...

Hoshino's Thinking Ahead...
Every year, Hanshin starts out strong, the entire region of Kansai gets excited, and then June rolls around. They come back down to earth, and while they're still in striking distance, along comes Koukou-yakyu (High School Baseball tournament), which takes place at Hanshin's home field, Koshien, causing the Tigers to embark on an Expos-like 20-game road trip, better known as "Shi-no-road" (Road of Death).

Being a long time Hanshin fan, I've stopped taking their fast starts seriously, ... until now. Not because they are 19 games over .500. Not because they are 7 games ahead of a depleted Giants' team. But because of this article: [Link - Yahoo Japan/Yukan Fuji in Japanese, and in English via The Fish].

This article basically states that, in an effort to keep his pitchers fresh, and given that Hanshin travels more than Kantou-based teams (Swallows, BayStars and Giants) anyway, starting pitchers that are not scheduled to pitch during road games don't need to make the trips and can practise on their own. Until now, such "favoritism" towards starting pitchers would draw frowns all over, but Hoshino has recognized that last year's swoons were partially due to the fatigue of his starting pitchers (READ: IGAWA!!), and the man is actually being proactive about it.

Now, if he's only learned to limit their pitch counts, I'll start my Magic Number count already. Go Tigers!!

Thank Suraj for your links. However, I cannot understand that English. [westbaystars: I provided that one, and the Fish can be rather confusing unless you understand a little bit of the original sentence structure and a lot about the topic.] Could you suggest any good links?

It is still June now, we should wait until August. I hope the Hanshin Tigers will be better this year.

Why doesn't Hanshin schedule to play after the high school matches, such as after 6pm? Why do the Giants only play at 6pm?

I agree with you that that long road trip is terrible.

Another thing is that Hanshin doesn't want to find a new foreign player to replace Pote?

They are looking in the minors in the U.S. for another relief pitcher, although Pote claims that he's "95% today, will be 95% tomorrow, and will be 100% in 5 days." That's got be the stupidest thing anyone has ever said, but he said it. So, we'll see how his situation progresses, and what the Tigers' search leads to.

Judging from Hoshino's (over-)use of his starters, Taninaka, Andoh, and Williams, though, it's apparent he has little faith in the rest of his pen. Not that I can blame him.
