Things that Upset Me

Things that Upset Me
Here in the New York area, SNY (cable television home of the Mets) and several other channels around the US have been showing the full Caribbean Series live. With two games played per day, this means that each day for a week they dedicate 7 straight hours of airtime to showcasing mostly (I said mostly) marginal MLB-quality players.

I then go over to MLB's official site and they are promoting this series big time. I've been somewhat interested in this series in the past and they have previously had nothing on it. The only coverage one could even find was in Spanish, usually on independent fan-run sites (like this one!).

So why is that we can't get even one game of the Japan Series shown here, by any network, even on tape-delay?

That, my friends, is something that upsets me.

At least you're getting the Caribbean Series. I don't get that here in Wisconsin. I would love to be able to see a game instead of just listening to some of it in Spanish on the Internet. I'm not fluent in Spanish, but can understand enough to listen to a game (understand the baseball chatter not the rest).

But I also agree with you about the Japan Series.

Caribbean World Series is affiliated with MLB. And the NYC area has a significant Caribbean population, so I reckon that explains it. I'm jealous though, I'd love to see ball being played in that atmosphere. And I wish the Asia Series would go to the Caribbean format of 6 straight days of double headers, but I don't see it happening with the current level of fan interest.

See also Caribbean World Series on Wikipedia.

Do you think it has to do with the amount of transplanted people from the Caribbeans? Especially New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Massachusetts.

As you're comparing this to the Japan Series and feel that the JS should be televised in the USA as well, you should consider that most Nippon Ham and Chunichi players from 2006 would be marginal MLB-quality players. To the average American fan, Juan Gonzalez, Miguel Tejada, Ramon Hernandez, and Vinny Castilla are bigger names than Fernando Seguignol, Alex Ochoa, and Tsuyoshi Shinjo and the average American fan has never heard of the real NH/Chunichi stars like Ogasawara and Fukudome.

- I then go over to MLB's official site and they are promoting this series big time. I've been somewhat interested in this series in the past and they have previously had nothing on it.

MLB.com's coverage of all baseball has improved significantly in the past year and I imagine this will continue. The MLB-NPB Series was covered there like never before. Baseball coverage online has improved. Also, more players in the Caribbean Series are past or future MLB players than from the Japan Series, so MLB should be interested more in the CS.

- So why is that we can't get even one game of the Japan Series shown here, by any network, even on tape-delay?

The TV rights for the Japan Series also are probably much more expensive to boot.
