Friday Night at Sapporo Dome

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
Friday Night at Sapporo Dome
Just got back from a great weekend in Sapporo and had the pleasure of watching the Fighters' home opening game. Well, I should say the pleasure of watching Darvish pitch! Fanned 14 batters, this kid is good! He threw a few bad pitches, and one of the Seibu runs was scored on an error, but he had a heck of a night.

Morimoto did well to beat out a throw to first to register an infield single, tie the game, and get Darvih off the hook. To whiff 14 and get tagged with the loss would have been a great injustice.

Last Fighters home game I saw was when they still played at Tokyo Dome in April 2002. You could actually hear the players talking during that game, so it was great to see how the local community has embraced the team! Lots of families and kids, awesome!

Just one thing, not sure how many posters have been to Sapporo Dome for a sell-out game, but the access was terrible. We had reserved seats and still queued in the cold and snow for about 30 minutes to get in. The limited number of entry points is really frustrating. Was it just because it was opening day? Maybe a regular HNHF poster (maybe Deanna) can enlighten us as to whether this is the norm.

Not sure if it was on TV, but did anyone see the stunt with the limo bringing the team into the dome? Hilarious!

Sadly, I've never actually been to Sapporo (I started following the Fighters when they were in Tokyo too, and have always seen them as the visiting team since), so I have no idea. Sorry!

I was joking the other day that the Fighters are simply making up for no tie games last year at all, by having three in the first week alone. Poor Darvish though, he's been on the mound for two of them. That's awesome that you got to see the 14-K game.

I always got the impression the Fighters were a very family-friendly team, too.

Hi Deanna, thanks for the reply! So you're one of the old hardcore Tokyo fans. Make sure you get to the Sapporo some time then. The contrast between playing in a near empty Tokyo Dome (well that was my one experience) and that of the Sapporo Dome is something else!

That place was really jumping on Friday night! Good luck to your guys this year - except during inter-league play against Hanshin of course.

I went to opening day in 2004 vs. Seibu. The same story, snow, long lines, and few access points. The game and crowd were awesome though! I would love to get back there one of these days.
