Rick Short
How is Rick Short being received over in Japan? He was a career minor leaguer in the U.S. (12 years), put up great numbers, and could not catch a break, even after hitting almost .400 in AAA, and hitting .400 for his short stay with MLB Washington. He seems to be in the league leaders so far this year, and was last year, and I just wondered how the Japanese baseball community viewed him.

Rick played for my favorite team, the Chiba Lotte Marines. He batted over .300 for them, but they really needed more power at the time, despite him hitting double digit homers. Looking at his time in Rakuten, that seems like quite an accomplishment now.

With Rakuten, which is a young and struggling franchise, they're very happy with what he brings. They accept the fact that he's not going to hit homers, so he brings a consistent .300 bat. He's batting .327 as I type this, good for #4 in the Pacific League. Honestly, I think major league teams get way too caught up in power numbers.

I always thought Short would have been (at the least) a solid major league role player. He might not have the power for a starting job, but I could see him hitting lots of doubles for 200 to 250 ABs a season.

I loved watching him play for the Mexicali Aguilas of the Mexican Pacific League, and am very disappointed that I didn't make it there last year for the regular season (I did 18 games in 12 days with the MLB/NPB tour, Konami Cup, and other stuff), and I won't make it this year either. I would love to see him play over there, too.

I definitely agree with Big Man Zam that the MLB teams get way too caught up with power numbers. I'm afraid that in the late '90s it reached the point where players had to do 'roids just to make enough of an impression to make the 25-man rosters. Rick Short had the misfortune of playing in the wrong era.

Hopefully, with sanity starting to return to the baseball world, he'll get the kind of opportunity which he's deserved for quite some time.

Rick Short got the wrong end of the stick, and I'm not sure why. Plenty of lesser players have made it to the Major Leagues. Any chance that he'll come back to American baseball? I know that he's getting old, but he deserves a chance.

His hitting was never a problem making a roster, it was the lack of defense.

Short's fielding was never up to par to hold a MLB job in the NL. That made him solely a pinch hitter without the DH in the NL.

I'd have to disagree with the D thought, but he did get that label. He fields better than half those on NL rosters that hit .210.

I'm just glad he's finally getting paid. I'm sure Japan will be happy to continue to pay him as he continues to be in the top 5 in batting, and the lowest K ratio in Japan.

Speaking of hitting .320+ all year, why no All Star game for Shorty?

Just want to keep people updated on Rick. He's leading the Pacific League batting title race right now with a .333 average. Naoyuki Ohmura was the leader for most of the year, but he's now second place with a .323 mark. If he can hold on, this would be his first title in NPB.

I am from Illinois. Rick is from Elgin, not far from me. My wife has played softball for years with Rick's sister and knows him well. He sure has gotten shafted in MLB. I don't know why an American league team can't use him as a DH. He is solid as a utility fielder as well.

Good Luck to him in Japan!

Hi, this might be a bit off topic, but I'm wondering if anybody has any update on Rick's father's condition. He's been off the games and back to the U.S. since last week to visit his father, who reported to had been in an accident.

Here in Japan we fans are really worried about him.

Any information would be appreciated.
