Akira Bessho

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
Akira Bessho
Takehiro (Akira) Bessho was "5th in career innings pitched, 7th in career winning percentage, 5th in career wins and 7th in career ERA plus 2 MVPs and 6 Best Nines."

Again, this would seem that a lot of pitchers are in this vicinity. John Clarkson or Kid Nichols might fit, but maybe they're from a time that is too relatively early. Maybe Carl Hubbell would be okay, but I'm guessing that Mathewson or Alexander might be better correlations. I need your help, Jim.

I think I'd go with Alexander, who started in the deadball era and pitched well into the offensive explosion of the 1920's. Bessho is sort of like that, so of the choices you mentioned, Alexander seems the best. Besides, didn't we use Mathewson already?

My uncle, who was a former Koshien star, told me that the closest thing to Roger Clemens in the NPB was Bessho Takehiko. Bessho was a burly big man of over 6 feet tall, especially tall for a Japanese player, and his pitching form was very similar to the Rocket.

While I can't speak for pitching forms, Alexander is listed as being six foot one. Mathewson is listed as six foot one (and a half inch!), and we're talking about a guy that pitched about a hundred years ago!
