Yutaka Enatsu: "The Japanese version of Dennis Eckersley, though his record as a starter is better relative to the league, but not quite as dominant relative to the league as a reliever."

Finally, one I can't screw up. Or will John Smoltz end up as a closer (pun intended) correlation?

I agree with you that he is a Japanese Dennis Eckersley in terms of his career as a pitcher who successfully switched from a starter to a closer, but his career as a starter was a spectacular one. He was more like Sandy Koufax. He was a freballing southpaw. I used to be terrified as a Giants' fan when he was in his prime.
