Long Ball vs. Small Ball

Long Ball vs. Small Ball
Quite a game of contrasts in Tokyo tonight! Not many teams go yard 7 times and still lose, really broke my heart (read sarcasm). Nice to see Hanshin show a bit of patience at the plate, worked the count and drew 7 walks. Good aggression coming home from Akahoshi steamrolling Abe, something I'd like to see more of in Japanese baseball when the catcher is blocking the plate.

One concern was Vogelsong, he's been pretty good of late, but I remember when he was at Pittsburgh he was accused of tipping his pitches. With 5 homers tonight and a team leading 10 home runs given up in just 16 starts, I wonder if the Giants' staff have spotted something too. He got punished on one seemingly pretty good pitch, a change up out of the zone that Lee somehow "golfed" into the seats.

A wild one tonight, but a nice victory! Here's to going top tomorrow!

The only player I've seen who really goes for catchers blocking the plate is Sekimoto. Just recently he went for the Swallows' catcher and was able to dislodge the ball and score.

Yep, that was a great play and a great example of aggressive base running. Sekimoto also slides hard into second when trying to break up a double play. Aims for the second baseman but make sure he's within reach of the bag. I guess as a second baseman, he knows what it takes to break up that play (and what he can get away with).
