Tiger's Triple Play
Tigers Baka posted this: "Oh well, it was nice to see the Tigers turn a triple play last night. I'd trade it for a win though."

Triple play?! I am a Tigers' dai-fan, but I missed last night's game. Triple plays are very, very rare. What happened? Does anyone have details?

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. I just noticed your post.

With runners on the corners, and Watanabe up to bat, he hit a ball right at Fujimoto who "fortunately" dropped it putting the ball into play. He picked it up and stepped on second for the force out, throwing to Arias at 1st to get the second out, and Arias quickly threw to home where Yano applied the tag on Ochoa. A triple play, nice one!

Do you think Fujimoto dropped the ball accidentally and the play was fortuitous, or that he saw the chance, dropped the ball intentionally, and the play was the result of fantastic foresight?

Hmmm, never thought about that. But given his inconsistent defense over the last couple of weeks, and my memory of the play, he looked as though he dropped it cold! It would be nice to think he had the instinct to do that though.

Yeah, I know exactly what you're saying. A few nights ago I was watching a Detroit Tigers' game with my dad (Indiana University Baseball Alumni) and a play happened similar to that in which a ball was hit right to Guilen. He caught it - and got the one out. My dad said, wow if he dropped that he could have gotten a triple play catching the base runners way off. The point being, if he had made that play intentionally, he would be more or less a baseball genius to think that fast.

I doubt that was the case as I would think you would only have a second to think about it. And your initial reacation is to catch.
