Day Games on a Weekday?

Day Games on a Weekday?
Okay, so I've been pretty much out of the loop the past few months, and I haven't really been keeping up on everything baseball related. I noticed that the past two games between Rakuten and Lotte were day games, on a weekday afternoon? This is the first time I can remember hearing of such a thing. Does anybody know why the games are being played in the daytime and not at night like usual?

I am sure the Eagles have decided that it is preferable to hold day games in April considering the low temperatures in Sendai this time of year.

Their first home night game is April 11 and their next one is the 22nd. It could be a baseball decision or it could be a marketing decision. If they can build it as part of their brand as a trendy thing to come to weekday day games, they could do very well.

Wow, that is unusual.

Upon quick research, I found that the Eagles had done this last year, too, after having been snowed on in one of their early season games in previous years [Yahoo! Questions - in Japanese]. But they only do this during the spring school holidays. Then again, the game on April 1st attracted only about 10,000.

"Only 10,000"? They averaged 15,519 people last season, so that's 2/3rds average capacity. Let's look back to how they did at the beginning of April last year:
  • March 31 vs. Orix - 13:05 (Sat) 19,570
  • April 1 vs. Orix - 13:01 (Sun) 15,692
  • April 3 vs. Nippon Ham - 13:00 (Tue) 10,900
  • April 4 vs. Nippon Ham - 13:00 (Wed) 11,342
  • April 5 vs. Nippon Ham - 13:01 (Thu) 18,021
  • April 10 vs. Seibu - 18:01 (Tue) 8,552
  • April 11 vs. Seibu - 18:00 (Wed) 8,895
  • April 12 vs. Seibu - 18:00 (Thu) 11,373
  • April 17 vs. SoftBank - 18:00 (Tue) 9,248
  • April 18 vs. SoftBank - 18:00 (Wed) 13,209
  • April 19 vs. SoftBank - 18:00 (Thu) 11,014
Ma-kun (Tanaka) could draw the fans day or night. When Ma-kun isn't pitching, the temperature of night games vs. day games most likely plays a greater factor.

I was hoping that the data would support 10,947 being a good turn out for a day game (which is what I feel), but they actually did better at the beginning last year (even ignoring the two weekend games). Interesting.

Will you kindly correct the spelling of the last name for Craig Brazell of the Seibu Lions in your stats page to "Brazell"?

Always happy to make corrections. Thanks for pointing it out.

Yikes! Drawing less on weeknights than weekday afternoons. Hope the team can start drawing more fans to the stadium.

Well, you also have to remember that the capacity of Kleenex Stadium Miyagi (heh, I still giggle at the new name) is 23,000 people? (I'm just getting that out of the Nikkan Sports Meikan book.) IIRC, it was even lower a year or two ago, something like a sellout crowd was 18,000 people? So 10,000 is over half the stadium.

But yeah, I assumed the day games were just due to the snow outs in the past. It can't hurt that this is still spring vacation for most school kids, though, true.
