Umpires

Discussion in the Open Talk forum
Umpires
The umpiring in the Pacific League has been awful this year. I have seen so many blown calls it's ridiculous. Calls that weren't even that close are blown by these incompetent morons. Anyone feel the same?

I'm not so sure about that, but it's not reported in Japanese media at least.

This applies to both the Central and Pacific Leagues. Both do not invest much time or effort in training or educating umpires. I believe that all you have to do is pass an eyesight test and a written exam.

Variable strike zones, missed foul balls, and many other errors are all parts of umpiring. You will never eliminate mistakes 100%, but some mistakes are more to do with incompetence than errors.
