Most Beloved Gaijin Players?
Who would you say are the most beloved gaikokujin players of the past 30 years? I remember certain players going to Japan (Tony Fernandez, Cecil Fielder, Bob Horner, Tuffy Rhodes, Randy Bass, Tony Tarasco, Ben Oglivie, etc).

Randy Bass still gets a fair amount of air time in Japan as he comes back from time to time to do some promotions and is well received by fans, after all these years. Being on that magical '85 Tigers team (their only Japan Series win) and winning the Triple Crown in both the '85 and '86 seasons while posting .350/.428/.718, and .389/.481/.777 in those seasons (the AVG and SLG in 86 are still Japan records, OPS too?) probably had something to do with it, too.

How about Brad "The Animal" Lesley? Although, he was probably more popular in Takeshi's Castle than pitching for Hankyu.

What about Rick Short? He plays hard every night and he produces each year!

Go Shorty.

I'll throw Alex Ochoa in the mix . I've never heard one negative thing about his personality and character, and he's been productive in Japan.

I like Ochoa a lot. Saw him do a hero interview the other day and was (still) impressed.

In the "Where are they now?" file, these days Randy Bass is a Democratic politician in Oklahoma, which I imagine is like eating soup with a fork.

Without a doubt Randy Bass would have to be the most beloved gaijin player of all time. Without a doubt. The last time I spoke to him was about five years ago at a promotion here in Kansai, and I saw that even the younger fans (i.e. those who weren't even born when he played here) were regarding him with the reverence usually reserved for deities. Just like this blogger.

In fact that's exactly how the chant used to go: "Kami-sama, Hotoke-sama, Baasu-sama!"

OK, what about George Altman, Willie Kirkland, or Darrly Spencer?
