Rios Banned for a Year

Rios Banned for a Year
I just read that Daniel Rios, signed this year by Yakult, a huge success in Korea in the last six years, was caught using steroids. He is banned for a year from NPB. Amazing.

Hochi Sports said that Rios actually failed two drug tests, one in late May and the other in early June. Rios says that he had some injections for a back ache during the 2007 off-season, but otherwise offered no explanation beyond saying that he though the year suspension was too severe and it would likely end his career because he is 35.

Now the Swallows have released him, which I approve of. He had a batting average against of .310, so the only good he was doing was for the salaries of opposing hitters.

No team officials will be disciplined since it is felt that they had gone the extra mile to warn players about the doping issue. They are likely, however, to "be more careful about how [they] sign foreign players," whatever that means. Rios, AFAIK, had never previously tested positive for anything while in Korea.

I understood he was aware of what he was doing. He was at least honest and we can say "good riddance" without the pretense that it was all "a big mistake."

I agree with Yakult, the NPB, and et. al. Stanazolol (Rios' drug choice) is a widely used drug by athletes that increases "explosive strength." So the initial reaction of receiving injections for backaches, etc. is a farce. Additionally, this drug remains in a player's system for only 3 weeks. It's a fast-in/fast-out drug. Can't get it at GNC or through anywhere else guys usually make up.

Looks like the NPB testing system has worked in this case.
