The Giants and their new look

The Giants and their new look
The Giants will have a new look both literally and figuratively next season. First of all, they copied the SF Giants and will adopt their god-awful alternate black uniforms (the ones where you can hardly read the numbers since their in black also). Then they released Domingo Martinez and were told by Darrell May that he will not re-sign with them. I don't know what May's thinking, but I'm guessing that he and Hara might have some issues. May appears to be headed back to the major leagues where I'm sure some team that's desperate for pitching (just about every team except the Yanks and the Braves) will probably pick him up. May was a perfect fit for the Giants I thought. I met him once and found him to be aloof and somewhat arrogant which is what most players on the Giants appear to be.

Also, the Giants appear to be on the verge of signing Benny Agbayani from the Mets. He would be a good fit as he would provide the Giants with power from the right side along with Kiyohara to complement the lefties Matsui and Takahashi. However, they put so much emphasis on defense here that I'm not sure if they'll appreciate his Lonnie Smith impression in left field. However, they put Martinez in left at times so I guess they're willing to take their chances. Neverhteless, I still hate the Giants.

That's interesting. I guess I'll see that in tomorrow's newspaper. No comment until then.

- Then they released Domingo Martinez and were told by Darrell May that he will not re-sign with them.

I had heard about that. There was a rumor that Yokohama was interested in both of them, as they really need someone who can hit the long ball and a left handed starter other than Nomura. (I think the team high was 13 home runs last season.) But both rumors were squashed yesterday by a staff member who said that Yokohama was not looking for any more foreign players - including Maru-chan and May.

- Also, the Giants appear to be on the verge of signing Benny Agbayani from the Mets.

This seems to be getting a lot of hype in the press. So, is Agbayani still in his prime? Many "big names" in MLB fail to make it in Japan, and that sounds like a familiar name to me - who's been pretty much out of the MLB scene for a decade.

- However, they put so much emphasis on defense here that I'm not sure if they'll appreciate his Lonnie Smith impression in left field.

So long as he's not an infielder, he should be OK. The foreign imported infielders for the Giants seem to be have been cursed this past 10 years. However, as you pointed out, they seem to be a little more tollerate about the outfield. And to Marniez' credit, I did see him make some great plays out there in left this past season. He's speedier than he looks, and gives the chase a 100% effort.

So, any early predictions on the new Hara Giants? B-class (bottom three teams) anyone?

He will turn 30 this December.

Agbayani's rookie season was 1998 and he's not even close to being a 'big name' (see career stats). I suspect you're thinking of someone else.

He's still under contract with the Mets. How would the Giants go about acquiring a non-free agent from a major league team? Is it similar to the posting system in Japan?

The Giants' new uniform made the front page of one of the sports papers on Nov. 13th (or the 14th). There was a picture of new skipper Hara modeling the new uniform, which was almost identical to the SF Giants' black uni.

Also, I didn't know that Agbayani was still under contract with the Mets, but I'm sure that if the Giants ante up enough money to both the Mets and Agbayani, Benny will ask for and be granted his release so that he'll be able to sign with the Giants.

I didn't get a chance to see the Lions' new unis, but it's about time they made some changes to their boring look. I didn't mind the road uniforms, but their all-white home look was an eyesore.

Did anyone out there see the Giants' new road uniforms? They bite. They had great unis already so all they had to do was change Tokyo to Yomiuri with the same lettering style, but they went with fancy lettering with even fancier numbers. The block numbers were nice. They shouldn't have changed anything about the uniforms except for the letters on the front.

What's next, the Giants' adopting the Blue Jays' dumb hard-to-read numbers for next season?

I don't mean to rant, but I really hate the trend of writing an injured player's number on the front of the caps. I think it first started in the '97 World Series with the Marlins writing Alex Fernandez's #32 on their caps, but now it's everywhere. It should only be done if a teammate dies like in the Cardinals case with Darryl Kile.

Just because a teammate broke a finger or a leg doesn't mean you have to show your love for your fallen teammate like that.

Hell, the Hanshin Tigers have something like 3 numbers on their caps. It's overkill and it's got to stop. If any more of their teammates get hurt, their caps will start to look like Dwayne Hosey's batting practice helmet with the Swallows.
