Japanese Stadia

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Japanese Stadia
Being a born and raised a Minnesota Twins fan, I've known for some time that the Tokyo Dome is based on the design of my beloved HHH Metrodome. Being that the Twins have been trying for years now to vacate the Dome in search of a baseball-only convertible-roof park, I was curious what the attitude to domed stadia in Japan was.

Do they hate them as much as Americans seem to? Was the Tokyo Dome built baseball-only? I've always thought the Dome had a certain modernist appeal to it.

I also found some pictures of the Seibu Dome, and I'm in love. Are those actually windows around the field?

If you can point me in the right direction for an English language site on the stadia, or answer any questions, I'd be delighted.

I don't think the roof is as white as the Metrodome is, because there are far less balls lost in the roof. During the day it is actually difficult, but since the Giants play almost exclusively night games, the problem only occurs when the Pacific Leage teams have a day game every now and then there.

The first main appeal of the Tokyo Dome was to house the always sold-out Giants, so they built a 55,000 seater, and primarily for baseball. There are a few American Football games played every now and then, and some other events [concerts, pro wrestling], but its original intent is baseball only (more seats around home plate, etc.).

The Seibu Dome was actually a complete open air stadium that they put a roof over in 1999, so those aren't windows, but open air, if that's what you're talking about. The big downside of that one is there's no air-conditioning, so it's about 100F/38C on summer nights with artificial turf.

As for a link in English here ya' go [Ballpark Trips from the Far East].

Thanks very much for the link and the info. I wish the Giants and the Twins could do a series together, a few games in the Tokyo Dome, a few in the Metrodome. It would be pretty interesting to get the players' take on the differences, too.

Of course, just as I say this (and I seemingly forgot to log in before posting) - BOOM, the Giants play a day game in the Tokyo Dome. Go figure. I only remember the Giants' day games occuring only at the old Sapporo Maruyama Stadium because it had no lights.
