I am from the states, following up on one of my friends, that plays for the Hawks and I was wondering if you could tell me about the players' salaries. Like on my friends bio page it says he makes 4200-man yen. How much is that in American dollars? And what is the average amount that these players make? Thank You.

"man" means 10,000, so 4200-man means 42,000,000 yen. If you calculate the exchange at $1 = 120 yen (which is not unreasonable in these uncertain times), then it'd be $350,000. That's per year, of course.

I'm not sure what the average is, but the highest paid Japanese player makes $6 million. I imagine that the average is somewhere below $1 million. Shuukan Baseball did an article on this just last year, but I don't have my back issues here with me in the States. Perhaps Westbay-san has it?

I have one better, this year's salaries. Querying my database, here's what I get:

MinMaxAvgCount
44061,0003812.7587800
All values in units of man (10,000) yen.

Getting results of different range blocks would be nice, but I don't have a RedBrick data warehouse on my machine. So, a few queries does the same thing:

Salary RangeCount
440-50063
501-60079
601-70042
701-80049
801-90029
901-1,00035
1,001-1,20048
1,201-1,40049
1,401-1,70041
1,701-2,20041
2,201-2,80042
2,801-3,50039
3,501-4,50047
4,501-5,50032
5,501-7,00042
7,001-9,00040
9,001-13,00030
13,001-20,00036
20,001-61,00016
