umpires

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
umpires
I am an umpire from the states and was curious if there are any american born umpires. Also, could you please find out the salaries for the blues. If I was to move to Japan and pursue a career as an umpire would I need to learn Japanese fluently or just enough baseball lingo to get me by. Would I be welcomed by the Japanese players and umpires or would I be looked as an outsider? With only 12 teams I would imagine it is very hard to become an umpire. About 8 yrs of umpiring in the minors is the average in America before being called to the show. How many yrs in the minors does it take in Japan? Any information you can give me would be greatly appreciated.

There was an experiment with a US umpire in Japan a few years ago, and it did not go so well. Here is a short thread on that subject by we amateurs on this site, but try Googling "Mike DiMuro" for more info.
About

This is a site about Pro Yakyu (Japanese Baseball), not about who the next player to go over to MLB is. It's a community of Pro Yakyu fans who have come together to share their knowledge and opinions with the world. It's a place to follow teams and individuals playing baseball in Japan (and Asia), and to learn about Japanese (and Asian) culture through baseball.

It is my sincere hope that once you learn a bit about what we're about here that you will join the community of contributors.
