Charlie Manuel, Sadaharu Oh, and the Broken Jaw

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Charlie Manuel, Sadaharu Oh, and the Broken Jaw
In the ****TUFFY RHODES**** topic of the open forum section, somebody mentions Charlie Manuel getting a broken jaw and spitting his teeth all over home plate.

I'd never heard of this incident before. Could you please enlighten your readers and I about it?

Thanks.

Although I don't have my copy of the book handy, here's a paraphrasing from Dan Latham's site...

Charlie Manuel: Winning two consecutive home run titles, Charlie Manuel led the Buffaloes to the Japan Series in 1979 and '80. In six seasons with Kintetsu and Yakult (1976-81), Manuel hit 189 home runs and batted .302. A harrowing story, as told by Robert Whiting in his book You Gotta Have Wa, Manuel was beaned in the face, spent six weeks in the hospital but came back to win the 1979 PL home run title and MVP.

Found another web entry...

Charlie Manuel, playing for the Kintetsu Buffaloes, is critically injured when a brushback pitch fractures his jaw in seven places. Hitting .371 with 24 home runs and 60 RBI at the time, Manuel will earn the respect of the fans for his determined comeback effort.
