Rick Short?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Rick Short?
The best story of this year's MLB season has been the call-up to the Nationals of 32-year old Rick Short, who spent 12 years in the minors before finally getting a taste of the big leagues this season.

There's a great article about him in today's Kansas City Star [Link]. In it, it mentions that he once played in Japan. I follow NPB closely, but I don't recall a Rick Short in Japan. Does anyone know when he played in Japan and who he played for?

I actually found out the answer to my question by Googling Rick Short. I found another good article about him here [Contra Costa Times].

I didn't recall him playing for the Marines in 2003. Even when SportsCenter went crazy with Rick Short notices earlier this season when he first got called up by the Nats, his name didn't ring a bell.

If you check out the Retired Foreign Batter Statistics over at Japanese Baseball Daily, there is a Rick Short listed, who played for only one season with the Chiba Lotte Marines in 2003. I don't remember him, but I was only interested in the Central League at that time.

Thanks for the help guys. Torakichi-san, your list stopped at "Shirai" when I checked out the "S" column.

Add Rick Short to the short list of guys (Larry Raines, Ty Van Burkleo, Robinson Checo, Timo Perez, Alfonso Soriano, Alan Zinter, Travis Driskill) who played in NPB before making their MLB debut.

The thing I remember most about Short was that in 2003 he got the most all star votes for a position he didn't play - shortstop. I still don't know if that was some kind of prank by a group of ballot stuffers or if it was just ignorance on part of a large number of voters. (Many people don't know anyone in the Pacific League, so they just choose names that are familiar, and Short works well at short.)

Also, Rick Short is a long-time former Oriole minor league player, and former Oriole draft pick. I'm happy for Short.

Played in 2003 for Chiba Lotte Marines, batting .303, 12 HR and 58 RBI.

Within that 12 years trying to get to the big leagues, he also spent some playing time in Mexican Pacific League with Mexicali Eagles, last season batting very well, .364 , 8 HR and 28 RBI in 32 games.
