Declaring Free Agency, But Remaining With The Same Team?

Declaring Free Agency, But Remaining With The Same Team?
Recently I've noticed some Japanese players have filed for free agency, only to sign a contract with the same team again. Currently Hanshin's Akihiro Yano is going through this process, but he stated that he doesn't want to play for other teams, or hear what other teams might have to offer. If you're going to sign with the same team, why go through the process of filing for free agency? Is it because you get a fresh new contract, and not an extension?

That's a good question. I wonder if it has something to do with maintaining free agency rights down the road.

It's a double edged sword. On the one hand, the player keeps his options open and is better able to negotiate a contract. On the other, several teams tell their players that declaring for free agency means they're gone - they won't negotiate.
