Converting Japanese Stats to MLB Equivalents
Is there a way to readily convert Japanese stats to MLB equivalent stats? If so, how does it work?

Jim Albright [Baseball Guru] has done a lot of research on this topic. Please see Major League Equivalents of NPB Cooperstown Candidates' Top Seasons and Major League Equivalents of Top NPB Performances for a sample of his work. He has been steadilly refining his conversions over the years.

I've looked at those but, unless I'm missing something, it doesn't explain the methodology whereas in his article on pitching conversions he does.

On the Jim Albright section of Baseball Guru I've been able to find his pitcher conversion method, but have been unable to find your hitter conversion method. Am I missing it or can someone tell me what it is please?

For example: for the pitcher conversion method, you multiply the Japanese stat by the following factors:
  • Hits 1.076
  • Homers 1.236
  • Walks 1.072
  • Strikeouts .884
Thanks,

Stu

For a full description of the methods for hitters, the two key articles on that are:
  1. Japanese Possibilities for the MLB for 2003 and
  2. How Many Homers Would Oh Have Hit In the Majors?
You indicated you found the article on the newer method for pitching conversions, but if anyone else is interested, it is here.
