Righty/Lefty Pitchers/Batters?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Righty/Lefty Pitchers/Batters?
Can anyone let me know how many left hand pitchers there are? How many right pitchers? How many switch hitters? How many left side batters? How many right side batter?

I feel that mostly left handed pitchers' ERAs are higher than right hander pithcers', especially this year.

Also, how many NPB pitchers' style of pitching is like Watanabe from Lotte (I feel that is less)?

No, I don't agree with you because most pitchers are right handed. I myself am a right handed pitcher. Also, the greatest pitchers were right handed and not left handed.

Pitcher handedness in 2005:
mysql> select throws, count(playerid) as 'count'
> from PlayerInfo
> where yearplayed=2005 and positionid='P'
> group by throws;
+--------+-------+
| throws | count |
+--------+-------+
| L | 123 |
| R | 260 |
+--------+-------+

Batter handedness in 2005:
mysql> select bats, count(playerid) as 'count'
> from PlayerInfo
> where yearplayed=2005 and positionid in ('C','IF','OF')
> group by bats;
+------+-------+
| bats | count |
+------+-------+
| L | 145 |
| R | 275 |
| S | 22 |
+------+-------+
3 rows in set (0.02 sec)
Note that this is all players, both ichi-gun and ni-gun, so I think that the data you want is a little more refined than this.

You can view Watanabe's lefty/righty splits (in Japanese) on Nifty Sports Pro Yakyu. As you can see, right handed opposition hit only .214 against him, while lefties hit .238 against the sub-marine right hander. Nobody gets as low as he does to the ground to make his delivery.
