Nippon Ham Fighters.

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Nippon Ham Fighters.
I love your website! I went to a Fighters' game at Sapporo Dome 2 weeks ago. My question is: Did the Fighters officially move to Sapporo and became the first Hokkaido team, or are they still from Tokyo and just play a few games in Sapporo? Thank you.

As far as I know, the deal to move to Sapporo has been done, and they will become a Sapporo-based team as of next season. Until then, they continue to play at their current home ground, Tokyo Dome (shared with the Giants), with a large number of games at their soon-to-be home ground, Sapporo Dome.

And will the Swallows in turn move to Tokyo Dome next year?

Is this the last year for Jingu? Or will it be used as a backup stadium for the Swallows in case there are scheduling conflicts at the Big Egg?

Will the move to Sapporo for Nippon Ham warrant any change to the uniforms?

Or a name change? I don't know any native speakers of English that don't call them the "Ham Fighters" or "The Fightin' Hams." Mind you, it's not as bad as it could be: as you know, Nippon Ham is the name of the company that owns them, but their official English name is "Nippon Meat Packers, Inc."

The Nippon Meat Packer Fighters, anyone? The Nippon Meat Fighters? Stick with Ham.

Again, good timing with a question.

While there have been rumors of Sapporo Nippon Ham Fighters or Sapporo Fighters, the team name still hasn't changed so far as I know. But their mascot is changing. Fighty will be replaced with a bear (I'd have thought that a northern fox might have been better, but Hokkaido's tourist association probably has it's copyright.) They're currently having a contest to name the new mascot [do-fighters.com - Japanese only]. You can see him and cast a vote (suggestion) at the contest link.

As for English nicknames for the team, I like calling them the "Fighting Ham" or "Ham-sters."

The Nippon Ham Fighters have changed their team registration and will be known as the Hokkaido Nippon Ham Fighters starting next season. Gambatte!
