Japanese Doubleheader?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Japanese Doubleheader?
Does anyone know why the doubleheader never took off in Japan? With the practice ethic here, you would think that the doubleheader would be no problem. Plus, it would help in the pennant race. If the Tigers had drawn even with the Dragons, it's a boring pennant race when the Tigers finish and the Dragons have 5 games left.

I think it's precisely because of this practice ethic that they don't have doubleheaders. The idea is that there must be a warm up of a specific type and length before each and every game, which means the players would be too tired to have two big practice sessions as well as two games on one day.

So it would be a big problem.

I was thinking that most of the oendan and cheering fans would also be completely exhausted after a doubleheader. I mean, I'm usually losing my voice after only 3.5 hours of cheering and singing. I can't imagine doing it for 7 or 8.

Doubleheaders are no longer scheduled in Major League Baseball either. Now MLB doubleheaders are only used to make up games canceled due to rain. Nippon Pro Baseball makes up rain canceled games on days that are purposely left open in October.

I wish NPB had a tighter schedule though. With all the domed stadiums and modern transport, there's no need for all the off days, especially before the Japan Series, it creates way too much lull. MLB does a great job in carrying over the pennant chase momentum into the playoffs which tumble right into the World Series.

Although the Major Leagues no longer schedules doubleheaders, they still play them to make sure everyone finishes the season at the same time. With the awkward pennant races and time off before the Japan Series, it would be nice to see them here. I don't expect it, but it would just be nice to see. It can backfire, such as when the Yankees and Red Sox had to play 5 games in 4 days back in August. As a Red Sox fan, of course I'd like to forget that series, but I still think all teams here should finish the season closer to the same date.
