Baseball as a Whole in Japan

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Baseball as a Whole in Japan
I am doing a research project about Japan and Baseball. I was wondering if anyone out there has information that would be able to help me out. I was looking for stats on the number of kids in Japan playing baseball. The number of college teams. The number of minor league teams, as well as semi-pro teams. Any of this information would help me out a lot. Thanks for everyones time.

Why don't you read the posts in the forums? That is called research. Follow the threads.

Kiyoshi - Get some manners! There is no need for such sarcasm.

I don't have any other data off hand, but it's a famous fact that over 4,000 schools nationwide compete in the qualifier tournaments for the summer high school tournament at Koshien.

I'll second what Sharks410 said. Where in the forums would he find this info, Kiyoshi? That would have been more helpful.

I apologize for the way I responded.

I should have replied that we can try to help to answer the specific questions.

However, for the more general questions of "Baseball as a whole in Japan" that a search of the past forums here can be very helpful.

There are twelve minor league or ni-gun teams in the Eastern and Western Leagues - one for each major Nippon Pro Baseball team. There are two major or ichi-gun leagues with six team each - the Central League and Pacific League.

Japan has semi-pro industrial leagues where the players actually "work" for companies such as Toyota and Toshiba. I don't know the number of industrial leagues or teams.

There were plans for at least three independent leagues this year - Shikoku Island League; Okinawan semi-pro league; and Japanese Independent League. These were mentioned in this thread at this site.

I'll try and find out more info.
