Longest and Latest Ending Games in Japan and Elsewhere
I am working on a project to identify baseball's longest games. I have found the following ones from Japan. Could you point me in the right direction to discover others that have lasted 20 or more innings, or lasted six or more hours, or concluded after 1:00 AM local time? (So far I have not found any that have ended after 1 AM.)
  • 28 innings Korakuen Kyujyo (Stadium), Tokyo, Japan on May 24, 1942 Japanese Professional Baseball Federation, Taiyo 4 Nagoya 4 in 3 hours 47 minutes, called a tie.
  • 6 hours 26 minutes Koshien Kyujyo (Stadium), Osaka, Japan on September 11, 1992 - Central League, Yakult Swallows 3 Hanshin Tigers 3 in 15 innings, rhubarb (argument)delay 0:37, finished at 12:26 AM in the early morning of September 12.
  • 6 hours 1 minute Hiroshima Kyujyo (Stadium), Hiroshima, Japan on October 1, 1992 Central League, Hiroshima Carp 8 Yakult Swallows 7 in 13 innings, given that this is in October, is this a Japanese World Series game or a Central League game?
Do you know of any others?

Thank you very much for your help.

My "2003 Baseball Record Book," Baseball Magazine Sha, ISBN4-583-03724-4 lists the 30 longest games, starting with your second longest one, Yakult vs. Hanshin on September 11, 1992, taking 6 hours 26 minutes (37 minute delay) over 15 innings. Unfortunately, starting time, ending time, and the score are not included, so I can't confirm anything beyond that.

Here's the top 10 (plus the longest Pacific League game which ranked #20):
   Teams Date Time Inn Comment
1 Yakult-Hanshin 1992.09.11 6:26 15 CL Record (37 minute delay)
2 Yakult-Yokohama 1996.09.08 6:19 14
3 Yokohama-Hiroshima 1998.08.09 6:13 15
4 Chunichi-Hanshin 2000.05.24 6:02 15
5 Yakult-Hiroshima 1992.10.01 6:01 13
6 Chunichi-Taiyo 1990.08.04 5:51 15
7 Hiroshima-Yakult 1993.05.19 5:46 14
7 Yakult-Chunichi 1998.04.10 5:46 13
9 Hanshin-Hiroshima 1994.09.06 5:45 15
10 Hiroshima-Chunichi 1994.08.25 5:43 15
-----------------------------------------
20 Orix-Seibu 2000.08.29 5:32 12 PL Record

The longest 9 innings games for each league were:

47 Taiyo-Hanshin 1990.05.06 5:10 9 CL Record
Daiei-Nippon Ham 1998.06.28 4:46 9 PL Regular Season
Nippon Ham-Lotte 1981.10.10 5:17 9 PL Play-off

As your top game was done in less than four hours, it isn't listed. I don't have a resource for most innings. Sorry.

If the question is "and elsewhere," I assume you have these games?
  • July 17, 1918 Cubs-Phils longest errorless game, twenty-one innings
  • May 1, 1920 Dodgers-Braves had twenty-six inning 1-1 tie
  • June 12, 1967 Senators-ChiSox six hours thirty-eight minutes and twenty-two innings
  • September 1, 1967 Giants-Reds longest shutout, twenty innings
  • May 9, 1984 ChiSox beat Brewers in eight hours six minutes
  • July 4, 1985 Mets-Braves was six hours ten minutes and ended at 3:55 AM!
  • June 3, 1989 Dodgers game seven hours fourteen minutes and twenty-two innings
  • June 23, 1981 minor league game that had Ripken and Boggs that finished after thirty-three innings
Hope this helps.

I believe the date above for the Ripken/Boggs game are wrong, and I do believe that is the longest game in pro baseball. [Link - 33 Innings at McCoy Stadium]
