Why the Day Off Every Week?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Why the Day Off Every Week?
I did a search on this site and the Internet, but I couldn't find anything on the subject, so I'll "Ask the Commish" (or anyone who has an answer).

I was wondering why NPB has to have a day off every week, with Monday's off for the Central League, and Thursday's off for the Pacific League? I know that MLB teams can go up to a full 20 games straight before they are required to take a day off.

Why doesn't NPB use some of those off days for making up rain-outs or something? Do they really need the same day off every week? I just think the season kind of drags on at the end when all the make-ups are being played. Is it so they can "time" the Nippon Series at the same time as the World Series? Does it happen to allow for extra media coverage and interviews?

This is actaully a very good question, one I've never thought of before. I've always accepted it as the way things are.

The reason that makes the most sense is that it complies to labor laws which state that one must give employees a minimum of one day off for every seven days. It doesn't have to be the same day off each week, and more than seven consecutive working days are permitted (to the best of my knowledge). That would explain why teams often play nine days in a row during the holiday season, taking a day off Tuesday one week, then Friday the next, for example.

Another possible reason is because management thinks that, with the high work load given to pitchers, that giving them a week to recuperate is best for them. I'm not saying it's a valid reason, just a possible one.

Then there's the possiblility that the Players' Union managed to win such a right at some point in time. I know that when the owners up and increased the schedule without so much as a word to the Players' Union a couple of times in the past that they got rather upset (but that didn't change the owners' minds), so a day off every seven days may have been a "gift" to the players by management to make up for being so arrogant.

Truth is, I don't know why. But I am glad that the Central and Pacific Leagues started staging their days off so that the airwaves aren't void of baseball on Monday nights anymore. I need my baseball fix.

Thanks for the reply. I asked some Japanese co-workers, and they didn't know either. Anybody out there have any other theories?

In the first post I asked about the possibilty of making up rain outs during the regular season, instead of after all the scheduled games had finished, and incidentally, I just read on Yahoo Japan, and Nifty that the Pacific League announced the make up dates for the 2 rainouts that Orix had, during the regular season. According to Yahoo Japan, the make up dates for the games are May 26 for Orix vs. Kintetsu, and Aug. 12 for Orix vs. Nippon Ham. [Yahoo! Sports - in Japanese]
