T. Woods?
I'm looking for info on one of my friends in Japan by the name of Tryone Woods. How is he doing and is he one of top American players in Japan?

Tyrone Woods is fearsome. His team, the Yokohama BayStars, is fairly lackluster, but pitchers facing Woods are rightly wary of him.

Actually, wasn't he Central League Home Run king last year? (Sorry, I can't recall.) His team came dead last and yet Woods alone sat on top.

As Torakichi-san mentioned, Woods was the Home Run King last season, sharing the crown with Yakult's Alex Ramirez at 40. While Woods hit three balls out of Yokohama Stadium and two more out of other stadiums last season, his 87 RBIs last year left him a little wanting.

Tyrone hasn't been hitting so many home runs this season, but his average has risen to .325 (end of play July 1) and he should surpass last year's RBI total in another month or so. You can get the current leaders here (Woods is in the Central League), and get his stats for last year on his player profile page.

While Woods currently leads North and South American players in the Central League in batting average, South American (Panamanian) Fernado Seguignol (Fighters) is ahead of him in both home runs and batting average, and Hiroshima's LaRocca (New York born) leads Woods in home runs.

He hit a grand slam vs. the Giants and Kisanuki Thursday night.

Tyrone is a huge hit with all us BayStar fans, not only with us foreigners, but he's also immensely popular with the Japanese cheering section.

He is still the main power behind the 'Stars, but this year Yokohama has had the pleasant surprise of him raising his average from the .270's to the .320's, and he has a huge on base percentage since he is walked more than any other hitter. He still is in the hunt for another home-run crown and is still crushing pitches right out of Yokohama Stadium.

The BayStars and all of Yokohama are thrilled to have such a great hitter to spark up the ballclub. Hopefully Tyrone and the gang will lift up after the all-star break and take the BayStars into a title hunt!

Bottom line,
Groovy Yokohama loves Tyrone!

Tyrone Woods is the first player to lead leagues in home runs in both Japan and Korea.

Last year, Woods hit 40 homers for the Yokohama BayStars to share the Central League Home Run Crown with Alex Ramirez of the Yakult Swallows, who hit his 40th on the last day of the season.

Tyrone hit 42 home runs to lead the Korean Baseball Organization in 1998. Overall, Woods compiled 174 homers, 510 RBIs, and hit .294 from 1998 to 2002 with the Doosan Bears.
