Japanese Emblem

Japanese Emblem
Watching the Japan vs. Cuba game tonight I noticed that the 'J' of the Japanese uniform emblem slightly resembled the shape of Japan. I asked my most avid baseball fan friends and they couldn't tell me. What do you think?

Not sure of the official stance, but I have always assumed the shape of the archipelago was an aspect of the design. I quite like it.

Slight digression: Even with wide-angle shots of ball parks, I thought I could identify quite a few Japanese baseball players by their build, stance, walk, swinging style, whatever. But out of their NPB uniforms (i.e., in the Japan uniform), I could harly even recognise little Atsushi Fujimoto let alone those from teams other than Hanshin, and I watch Fujimoto six times a week during regular season!

Stupid question: Who came up with the name "Japan"? The Japanese call Japan - "Nihon/Nippon"!

The English pronunciation of "Japan" is thought to come from Europeans' attemps at the Chinese pronunciation of the word. Which is roughly Zi Ban (Mandarin) or Ya Buen (Cantonesse). I could go into the subject further, but then it becomes a political discussion.

I went to WordWizard.com and found that the "Universal Dictionary of the English Language" indicates that "Japan" may have come from the Chinese "Jih-pun" (possibly an older pronunciation of "Riben") which means "sunrise."

Marco Polo referred to Japan as "Zipangu." Susumu Enomoto wrote that "Gu (guo) means 'country,' so The Country of the Rising Sun. Nihon and Nippon are also Japanese pronunciations of the Chinese characters riben."
Origin of "Japan"

The word Japan comes from Nippon as far as I know. When the Portuguese first came to Japan they pronounced Nippon as Zippon, and later it became Zappon, and then Jappon and then it became Japan in English. Or something like that. I studied Japanese language a couple of years ago at the university.

I'm still not clear on the meaning of the emblem.

It's just a "J" followed by "apan" to make "Japan." They have it on their hats like the Giants have a "YG" emblem. It looks similar to the archipelago of Japan, but the archipelago itself resembles a "J," so that's to be expected.

Just think of it as an artistic font.
