Yu Darvish Post-WBC?
Hi there,

Does anyone know if Yu Darvish will be re-joining the Nippon Ham Fighters team after the WBC is over? Thanks!

That should be the case with all NPB based players. Major leaguers will be rejoining their MLB teams. Same as any other country.

Thanks. I've just been hearing a lot of rumors about him possibly coming to play in the U.S. soon, so I was just checking to see if anyone had any more information about him.

Where are those rumors coming from? The guy isn't eligible for free agency for another four years or so!

Darvish said he will stay in Japan. He has no plans to go to MLB. NPB really cannot afford to lose any more stars.

If Darvish were joining MLB this year, you obviously would have heard about it. However, saying that he has 4 more years until free agency doesn't mean much. The common thing is to be posted a year or two before becoming a free agent. That means the Japanese team gets a load of money in addition to the salary paid to the player. Since Matsuzaka got around $50 million, look for Darvish to get at least that. He hasn't said he wants to go, but we'll see what happens a couple years down the road.

I think Darvish has to show a little more consistency over the next year or two before he rates Matsuzaka-level money in the posting process.

Oh yes it does - it means he won't be going to the majors for at least three years. Nippon Ham won't be posting him until he's got a year to go, because that maximizes their investment in him.

Nippon Ham would be flat out stupid to post Darvish. It would lose more money in the long term than it would ever get back via the posting system. That's probably one of the main reasons why (from the team's point of view) that he's staying right where he's at.

Darvish's numbers have been so consistently good the past couple seasons and the buzz so high that I think he will easily surpass the money bid on Matsuzaka. Of course this all depends on whether he goes or not, the global recession, and if the ridiculous posting system is done away with.

Pat, you're right that it does matter. I just meant that if he does go, he will most likely go before the four years are up. But it does make sense for the Fighters to wait until that last year.

Anyway, terrible system (posting system) and hopefully it will be done away with. This is all Irabu's fault, right?

No, Nomo's actually. Or Soriano's. They retired just to go to the big leagues.

Something else: If you watch the short video of Darvish on mlb.com - when he strikes out Dunn the gun shows a triple digit number. Can Darvish really hit 100+ mph on the gun?

MLB guns are said to be off. I don't know the physics of traveling baseballs, so I don't know if NPB guns are better. Some people say it's intentional - people like it strong and fast. My money is on poor manufacturing.

Darvish and Iwakuma should be in the Major Leagues. When are they going to be posted? The Yankees sure can use their help!

I was going to ignore this message. I am getting so tired of hearing this. Fighters' and Eagles' fans think they shouldn't.

Just in case westbaystars doesn't say anything, I will say it. This is not the place for you if your only interest is the Yankees.

Darvish again registered 100 mph in the WBC final. There is definitely a difference between NPB and MLB. I hope everyone takes pitch speed with a grain of salt.

I didn't see Darvish hit higher than 96 on the gun reading ESPN was showing in their broadcasts. His personal best in Japan is in the 95/96 range as well.

Sure, and I meant that he won't be going any time soon, to dampen the expectations of the original poster.

Don't leave Darvish! So far his comments have been encouraging stating that he wants to win 200 in Japan. I hope he stays. The only time I can think of me wanting him to leave for the Majors is if he is going to be an FA going to Yomiuri.

On ESPN they said Darvisah hit 100 miles.

Team Japan manager Tatsunori Hara riding young stud Yu Darvish late in the game for a second straight night and being rewarded when the kid hit 100 mph on the gun and pitched two complete innings to earn the win. [Link]

That's 160 kilometers. I don't think he can throw that hard. He is about 155, I think.
