Meaning of Renpai?

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Meaning of Renpai?
Just a simple linguistics question. While the Tigers were beating the Giants tonight, the announcers kept saying how the Tigers were "juichi-renpai" against the Giants. I understand "renpai" refers to a losing streak, but in fact the Tigers do have a tie with the Giants during this stretch. Technically, a "losing streak" and a "winless streak" are different things in English. However, in Japanese can "renpai" refer to both then?

That is correct. Because ties have been a part of the game for so long, they are often ignored in reference to streaks. So rensho (consecutive wins) and renpai (consecutive losses) can and often do have ties sandwiched in there. If a team has a streak without any ties in the middle then that will often merit an asterisk.
