The Giants weren't going to continue paying two first basemen multiple oku yen salaries, so Petagine was let go. (They almost released Kiyohara as well, but that's a different story.) Petagine was too expensive for any other team. And before anyone says that he'd probably have accepted a huge pay decrease, no team seems to want to offer a highly paid foreign player a huge cut in salary for fear of overly offending them. At least, that's been my observation of those foreigners who have voiced that they'd accept a decrease to continue playing in Japan, but never got an offer.

Rumor is he might be headed to Boston. [Link - USA Today]

USA Today, said that the Red Sox might sign Roberto Petagine to a minor league contract. If Petagine, makes the Red Sox he would back up Kevin Millar at first base and be a part time DH. [Link - USA Today] [MLB Stats - RotoWorld]
