Players in Winter

Discussion in the Ask the Commish forum
Players in Winter
Why do the Japanese players not play baseball in one of the winter leagues (like Dominican, Mexican, Puertorican, or Venezuelan leagues)?. If some Japanese players will be free agents and are thinking about moving to the MLB, it may be better for them to play winter ball.

Actually, many do play winter ball. The Hawaiian Winter League is well known for turning out title winners with young Japanese who have played there.

Some Carp have practiced at the Carp Acadamy in the Dominican Republic in the past, but I haven't heard of any lately.

The Hawaiian Winter League has not operated since the 1997-98 season. It only lasted five years.

That's a shame. I guess that also explains this data only going through 1997.

As you can see from the list of players who played in the Hawaiian Winter League, there are many big names on it whow were pretty much no-names at the time.

Y'know, I wondered about that. After years of great activity, suddenly no-one from Japan went to play in Hawaii anymore.

Carp Academy is for development of new players (rookies), like the Yankees' academy, Dodgers' academy, etc. The only Asian player in Dominican Winter League was Chan Ho Park (from Korea) six or seven years ago.

The Hawaian league is (or was) good, but the best winter baseball around the world is played in Caribbean places (Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, and Venezuela). If a player wants to go to MLB, it is best for him play winter ball in Dominican.
