Timing is one of the most important facets of hitting. From the time the hitter’s front foot leaves the ground until contact is made usually takes more than .4 seconds. Therefore, the first part of the swing, when the front foot comes up off the ground often happens before the ball leaves the pitchers hand. Some hitters will lift their front leg very high (Juan Gonzalez) while other hitters hardly lift their leg at all (Joe DiMaggio).
