西武が３月に入って初の敗戦を喫した。楽天青山を攻略できず、投手陣も９回に登板したルーキー岩崎哲也投手（２４＝三菱重工横浜クラブ）が６失点と炎上するなど結果的には大敗となった。３月のオープン戦は１４試合で９勝５分けと負け知らず。前日２４日の開幕戦勝利を含めると１０連勝中だったが、２６日ぶりに敗戦を味わった。伊東勤監督（４４）は「まあ１勝１敗で、あさってから出直しです」と気持ちの切り替えを強調した。
