楽天が球団３年目で初の５連勝を飾った。ルーキー田中将大投手（１８＝駒大苫小牧）が７回途中まで１失点と好投も終盤に追いつかれ延長へ。それでも勝利への執念で１２回にウィットが決勝犠飛を放ち、３－２で日本ハムを撃破、４位タイに浮上した。日本ハム田中幸雄内野手（３９）は７回に田中から４号ソロを放ち、新旧「田中対決」で意地を見せ、２０００本安打まで、あと２に迫った。
