西武栗山の決勝打が左前に転がると、一塁側ベンチは総立ちになった。伊東監督も何度も手をたたいて殊勲の一打をたたえた。敗色ムードが漂う２点差の８回だった。まずは細川の右中間への２点適時二塁打で同点。２死二塁から栗山が１４１キロの外角直球を逆らわずにはじき返し、連敗を３で止めた。クライマックスシリーズ出場圏内の３位へ５・５差と、ぎりぎりで踏みとどまった。
