がけっぷちで中日中田は踏ん張り続けた。０－０の４回２死一、二塁。阪神赤星との粘り合いは壮絶だった。こん身のストレートを投げ込む。赤星が食らいつく。先制点をめぐる１２球の攻防。最後は狙いを完全に外すスライダーで見逃し三振。マウンドを降りる中田の球数はすでに９２球に達した。「野手の皆さんに申し訳ない気持ちでいっぱい。満塁では絶対にボールになるわけがない自分を信じて投げました」。
