３位巨人が生き残った。首位阪神に７連敗すれば相手に優勝マジックが点灯する可能性のあった決戦に１１－１で大勝した。先発内海哲也投手（２５）は４回に頭部へ死球を受けながらも、６連続を含む７回１３奪三振の力投で１３勝目を挙げた。内海の死球の直後、高橋由伸外野手（３２）が放ったお返しの３３号３ランも効いた。チームは連敗を２で止め、２位中日もヤクルトに逆転勝ちし、３強が再び０・５ゲーム差にひしめく大混セとなった。
