ヤクルト・古田監督が絶賛したのは、石川の完封を引き出した捕手・川本のリードだ。「大胆に内角を突けた。球速のない投手だと（普通は）弱気になるけど、ベースをいっぱいに使った会心のリードだ」と褒めちぎった。自身の後継者づくりに頭を悩ませてきた１年。不用意な配球でサヨナラ本塁打された試合では投手ではなく、川本をしかりつけた。川本は悔しくてベンチで号泣したほどだ。若手の成長を喜んだ古田監督は、２６日に自身最後の「出場選手登録」をすることを明言した。
