新たなライバル出現にも横浜村田は動じなかった。中日戦終了後、ヤクルト・ガイエルが２本塁打したことを知ったが「ガイエル？ （自分も）打ちます」と表情は変わらなかった。３６本で本塁打王争い単独トップに立つが、この日はノーアーチ。１本差だった中日ウッズも不発でシーズン終了。ウッズと戦っている間にガイエルが１本差まで猛追してきた。残るは８日からのヤクルト２連戦のみ。本塁打キング争いは村田、ガイエルの２人に絞られた。「死守するんじゃなくて、もう１本くらい打てればいいですね」。村田は力強く話した。
