パ・リーグの覇者・毎日オリオンズ（現千葉ロッテマリーンズ）がセ・リーグ優勝の松竹ロビンス（５３年に大洋と合併）に３勝２敗と王手をかけた第６戦、毎日は３点を先行されたものの、３回に打者１２人の猛攻で６点を奪い逆転。８回に７−７同点になったが、延長１１回裏に松竹のエラーで毎日がサヨナラ勝ち。日本シリーズ初代チャンピオンとなった。
