Japanese Pitchers in Spring Training

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Japanese Pitchers in Spring Training
In the last days of December I read that two pitchers from the Nippon Ham Fighters (one of them is Shintaro Ejiri) will train for two weeks with the Arizona Diamondbacks, just like Ichiro, Hoshino, and Ebisu did back in 1999. Is this still true? Any word or article about it?

I have some questions for "japfan": Have you seen any baseball games in Italy? Do you have any information about Italian Baseball? Italy and the Netherlands are the premier baseball countires in Europe.

Italian baseball is as good as with Netherlands, it's the best in Europe. Yes, I saw many games in the past because there was a strong team here in Milano where I live, but today... it's a poor sport without followers and without people (and companies) investing money in the cause. There is no TV coverage so it's famous and it's played only in some districts (Anzio, Nettuno, Roma, Grosseto) where U.S. soldiers were during World War II.

Anyway, I love the sport and I started to follow it because my father played in the Italian Major League.

That's really interesting. Who would have thought? I assumed Europeans were all soccer mad (although Italy has a sometimes strong rugby team).

Have any Europeans ever played in NPB?

Hensley Meulens? Can I cheat and and mention Aussies such as Nilsson and Jeff Williams (since Australia is part of the British Commonwealth)? How about Victor Starfin? Though Starfin came to Japan as a kid during the Russian Revolution.

Victor Starfin is by far the best European in NPB ever, if there has been any other at all. Baseball is considered the second biggest team sport during the Summer time in Europe, but the level is not good enough at all for any professional teams in either NPB or MLB.

I live and play baseball in Europe, but the interest for baseball is going down in many counties in west Europe. On the other hand, it is getting bigger in east Europe, especially among the countries from the former Soviet Union.

Are there many specialist baseball facilities available? Here in Japan, of course, many parks and just about all school grounds have the tall fences or nets particular to baseball grounds. Also, sporting goods stores devote a lot of space to baseball equipment. I guess it's easy for kids to take up baseball, as things are rather geared towards it.

Gomenasai Administrator/Commissioner:

I apologize for getting off track with European Baseball. It seems Torakitchi, I, and others got off track before and that resulted in the Around Asia forum.

Hahaha!!!

I wouldn't say that there are many baseball facilities in Europe. You have to remember that Soccer is by far the biggest sport over here, and therefore, most of the sport facilities you will find are soccer fields or soccer related. It also happens that baseball games are played on soccer fields, too. Most of the equipment in the store is also soccer related, and it is not common to find baseball stuff in a regular sports shop. You have to order it.

You will find, however, some baseball fields in many countries in Europe, but you just have to look a bit closer.

The February 26, 2003 Japan Today [Link] reported that the Kintetsu Buffaloes' pitchers Hideki Asai, Etsuji Taniguchi and Kazuki Kondo will at the Dodgers spring training camp from March 2 to April 1.
