Leon Lee Resigns from Cyclones

Discussion in the Nichi-Bei forum
Leon Lee Resigns from Cyclones
Leon Lee's post-Japan stint as a minor league manager is over in its opening month. The longtime Pro Yakyu ball player, coach, scout, and manager was busted by police in Port St. Lucie, Florida for allegedly exposing himself to patrons and employees of a hotel. The father of Cubs' first baseman Derrek Lee immediately resigned from his job with the Brooklyn Cyclones. Orix Blue Wave's former kantoku pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Isn't baseball supposed to be a trip through the toy store of life? A brief detour from the sordid old world around us? That sound you hear is of illusions shattering.

I just read an article from the New York Times' web site regarding this incident. The article provides a few more details about what happened:
According to a police report, Lee was involved in an altercation with a group of women who were staying in the room next to him Monday and Tuesday night at the Holiday Inn in Port St. Lucie. The women told the police that Lee had exposed himself to them and touched himself. Lee told the police that the women were knocking at his door and inciting him with profanity.

Lee denied the 2 counts of exposure of sexual organs, but he turned himself in to avoid the embarrassment of being arrested.

The article should be on NYtimes.com for a few days, but the web site requires a free registration.

I heard about this incident on a sports radio program here in the U.S. The host of the show was clearly smirking as he read the news about Leon Lee and he had a good chuckle after he finished reading the news.

I, for one, am shocked at the news. I've followed Leon's career in Japan since the early 1980's and I have never even heard or seen any type of behavior from him that would indicate that he was capable of doing something like this. Either someone is lying, or something possessed Leon to act this way. If something did possess Leon to do this, it sure wasn't spontaneous as he allegedly did this over a 2-day period.

Until Leon is proven guilty, I'll believe that he did not do what these women claim he did.

I am glad you mentioned the concept of innocent until proven guily. Before anyone convicts Leon Lee in the court of public opinion, I think all should read this from a NY Newsday (excerpt):

The lawyer for former Class A Brooklyn manager Leon Lee said his client could be cleared of indecent exposure charges by early next week. Lee resigned April 8 amid allegations that he had exposed himself at a Port St. Lucie hotel, but his lawyer, Richard Kibby, expects the charges to be dropped when the results of his own investigation are given to prosecutors next week.

"There's another side of this story that bears out what Lee has been saying," Kibby said.

I, too, find it hard to believe that Leon would act, unprovoked, in such a matter. It is a loss to baseball if he is not cleared of this and allowed to return to the sport he has given so much to. His work with the farm system of the Cubs, as well as his work in Japan, contributes greatly to the game as a whole.

His court date has been delayed, which means the charges have not been dropped.
