I'm surprised that Huang Chia An, Wu Chao Kuan, and Hu Chin Lung aren't mentioned on the observance list. If Lo Ching Lung, Cheng Chi Hung, Chen Yung Chi, and Chen Wei Yin are being considered for the team, then you've got to look at the aforementioned 3 players.

In what's been a disappointing start for Taiwanese players in North America, Hu has been the lone bright spot - earning a well deserved SAL all star recognition. Hu definately deserves a shot in making the 2004 Olympic roster.

LOL: The number of amateur pitchers > professional pitchers.

Good job CPBL.

I'm surprised that Lo (Rockies), Hu (Dodgers),and Cheng (Jays) didn't make the team.

Olympic is supposed to be a stage for young players to play anyways. I don't think there is anything to get sarcastic of.
Re: Taiwan Olympic Rosters
[ Author: Guest: Jason | Posted: Jul 7, 2004 4:47 PM ]

I disagree with you. I think the Olympics is for the best athletes in the world to represent thier countries, whomever they may be.
Re: Taiwan Olympic Rosters
[ Author: Guest: Frank | Posted: Jul 7, 2004 6:50 PM ]

That's why the "Dream Team" was invented for the 1992 Olympics after bunch of college kids only helped the USA to get a bronze medal at a sport they should be dominate and beat everyone by as least 20-30 points. And 12 years has gone by, what a shame a bunch of NBA stars are turning down the offer to represent the U.S. in the Olympics.
Re: Taiwan Olympic Rosters
[ Author: Guest | Posted: Jul 7, 2004 7:17 PM ]

So, how come MLB players are not allowed to play the Olympics? Excluding the MLB players in the Olympic is equivalent to excluding "the best athletes," for whichever their countries might be.

[Admin: This thread is degenerating into Olympic politics rather than the Taiwanese team. Let's try to get back on topic.]

Does anyone know any information of another Taiwanese National Team (one with younger players, that is, I would assume)? The team is coming to Durham, NC for a couple games next week against Team USA, who is just playing for pride with bunch of college players. Any info would be appreciated.

I'm going to go the ballpark office tomorrow and ask them if they've got the roster available. But if anyone has any info about another Taiwanese National Team, please let me know!

Can you read Chinese? Amateur national team rosters are here: Link.
Re: Taiwan Olympic Rosters

I e-mailed them couple days ago and they send me the roster in English, and yes I can read Chinese and they seem to match beside the Japanese coach on the team.

Here is what I got:

No Position Name
81 Head Coach YANG, SHIEN-MING
72 Coach LIU, CHIN-SHN
65 Coach LIN, KUN-HAN
80 Coach SAKAI, MITSUJIRO
Trainer HSU, CHIA-EN

11 P LIN, YUEH-PING
15 P KAO, MIN-CHING
21 P WANG, KUO-CHENG
25 P TU, CHANG-WEI
37 P WU,JUI-HSIN
46 P LAI, CHUN-NAN
56 P KENG, PO-HSUAN
60 P PAN,CHIEN-TSUNG
61 P SHEN, YU-CHIEH
91 P LIN, EN-YU
98 P CHUANG, HUNG-LIANG

8 C WANG, HSIN-MIN
22 C WENG, TSAI-SHENG
34 C KAO, CHIH-KANG

5 IF YANG, PO-JEN
9 IF HUANG, SHIH-HAO
10 IF LIU, KENG-HSIN
14 IF WANG, SHENG-WEI
23 IF TIEN, HSIEN-MING
31 IF CHEN, CHIA-WEI
43 IF HUANG, HSIAO-WEI

7 OF CHAN, CHIH-YAO
13 OF LEE, HUNG-YU
20 OF HUANG, CHENG-WEI
45 OF KUO, CHUN-YU

Is there a site that contains the roster with the players' birthday, ht/wt, and their hometown? I compared the roster with the one for the Olympics and see about 5 players are on both teams.

Also, are there any tips of who might be signed and play in the U.S. in the future?

Sup Frank,

I think this roster represents Taiwan's collegiate level National Team that will play later this month in the World University Baseball Championships in Taiwan.

Here's the boxscore/story for Thursday's game between Taiwan and USA: [Link - USABaseball.com, in English]

I don't know too much about most of the players, but the ones I do know about are:
  • Tu Chang-Wei/P 6-02, 187 lbs, born May 11, 1982
This dude was the MVP of last year's NBC World Series Championship held in Wichita, KS. I think he only throws in the mid 80's, but from what was said about him, he throws a great changeup.

  • Keng Po Hsuan/P
In a previous post, Kennywur stated "Bo-Hsuan Gan, now 19 years old, could often throw 88-91 mph fastball. He says he will join the Toronto Bluejays this September." This kid also played on the silver medal winning AAA National Team for Taiwan in 2002 on a star studded team that included Hu Chin Lung (Dodgers), Chen Wei Yin (Dragons), and Wu Chao Kuan (Mariners)

  • Lin Yueh Ping/P 5-11 161 lbs, born Jan. 28, 1982
He is a veteran of international competition and has pitched in a number of tournaments for Chinese Taipei with mixed results.

  • Kao Chih Kang/C 5-11 165 lbs, born February 7, 1981
He was the hero for the National Team in 2003's win over South Korea during the Olympic qualifying games for Asia.

Additional bio info for players that I could muster up are:

  • Chuang Hung Liang/P 184 cm 80 kg, born October 22, 1980
  • Lin En Yu/P 185 cm 80 kg, born March 25, 1981
  • Weng Tsai Sheng/C 170 cm 68 kg, born January 29, 1982
  • Chen Chia Wei/IF 186 cm 85 kg, born ?
  • Chan Chih Yao/OF 178 cm 72 kg, born January 2, 1983
*member of the talented 2001 junior National Team that included Hu (Dodgers), Chen Yung Chi (Mariners), Cheng Chi Hung (BlueJays), Lo Ching Lung (Rockies)
  • Huang Cheng Wei/OF 180 cm 77 kg, born February 11, 1984
*fellow member of the 2001 junior National Team

Misc:

  • Kuo Chun Yu/OF was a member of the silver medal 2002 AAA(junior) NT and hit .323 in that tourney.

I think that Tu Chang Wei and Keng Po Hsuan are probably two of the most likely to get signed to play pro ball in the U.S. Anyone else with any input?

Yo Andrew, I think BaseballAmerica has "borrowed" your English translation of team Taiwan. Check out their link: [Link]. The spelling of the players are exactly the same as the way you spelled them.

I think they should be aware that IF Chen Yong-Ji (amateur) is actually also known as Chen Yung-Chi here in the U.S. and is playing for Everett in the Seattle Mariners organization.

BA should give credit where credit's due! I think this site and it's patrons give the most advanced, up to date info in English on Taiwan baseball. Thank you all!

[ Author: Guest: Frank | Posted: Jul 16, 2004 10:25 PM ]

Thanks dude.

I went to the game yesterday, what a great 6-5 win by Taiwan. Nice to see about 50+ Taiwanese fans show up to support the team. I had my 3' x 5' Taiwanese flag waving throughout the game.

I talked to coach Yang and Lin for a while as well as Chun-Nan Lai. I'll probably go to tonight's game as well.
