Nationals Considering Maekawa

Discussion in the Rumor Mill forum
Nationals Considering Maekawa
The Washington Nationals are in negotiations with pitcher Katsuhiko Maekawa. Maekawa didn't play in NPB this year. The Washington Post said nothing was imminent and that there is a chance other teams could still be involved. It's rumored he would compete for a starting rotation spot in a weak Nationals rotation. Though, honestly I can't see this working out too well as a starter for the Nationals based on the numbers.

Maekawa has a career 31-45 record with a 5.26 ERA in 149 games.

Maekawa has hired CAA (Creative Artists Agency) to represent him in contract talks. CAA represents Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Colts quarterback Peyton Manning, soccer star David Beckham, and many Hollywood actors.

I guess Jim Bowden likes to pick up guys who have been in perpetual trouble with the law like Elijah Dukes, and guys with bad reputations like Lastings Milledge, so someone with a track record like Maekawa could fit in real well.

Hello,

Can you elaborate on the troubles of Maekawa?

Also, why did he not pitch last year?

Thanks,
Scott

Yeah, what's up with that team? Maybe they're trying to add some character to the team. They just chose the bad variety.

This is a surprise - he was washed out as a pitcher when he played for the Tigers, and that was 2004/2005, though he did play on the team that beat the Yankees. I cannot see anyone getting any value from him.

Even if you put aside that hit and run accident that cost Maekawa his Japanese career (surprised he didn't end up in Korea or Taiwan), who has he gotten out the last few years? Pretty much nobody. Unless the Nats can work miracles, this is a garbage scow acquisition.
