Chinese Professional Baseball

Discussion in the Baseball Asia forum
Chinese Professional Baseball
A couple of days ago, it was reported on one of the TV networks' sports news segments that "Kintetsu has entered into a tie-up with the Shanghai Golden Eagles of China's professional baseball league, which was established last year."

"Oh wow, that's interesting" thought I. Then I found this article by Garland-san in Baseball Guru saying a similar thing, but dated the 15th of September 2002!

Was the TV report incredibly late being screened, or is it talking about a different matter?

I would like more information about this new league on Mainland China. How will it affect Taiwan's Chinese Professional Baseball League? I heard that some of the players who were banned from the CPBL (because they jumped to the Taiwan Major League a few years ago) might play in the Mainland China League.

Yeah, me too. Also, I wonder what Kintetsu's tie-up will actually involve. I originally thought it would be lots'a cash, perhaps for setting up some decent facilities, along with assistance with training, etc. However, if Kintetsu is haemorraghing like has been suggested elsewhere on this site, I can't see them being too keen to give away a whole lot more.

The previous item I ran about the deal between the Buffaloes and the Shanghai Eagles may have been when it was merely in the talking stages. Yokohama has their feelers out to the Chinese as well (pretty appropriate, too).

I don't really see a mainland China league affecting the Taiwanese, at least in the short term, since the money won't be there. The Taiwanese players will go where the cash is, and that is either MLB or Japan. I will be interested to see what happens if Chen Wen-Bin lights it up this season. It could really energize the popularity of pro baseball in the Chinese-speaking world. But then again, maybe not.

In any event, the mainland Chinese will do more tie-ups with the Korean and Taiwanese leagues and it may be interesting to see in ten years or so how that affects player movement. On the other hand, the KBO has really taken a dive in popularity and something similar could happen in China. We'll just have to wait and see.

It may not be so any more, or maybe I never fully understood the situation all together, but I was under the impression that someone with a Taiwanese passport wasn't allowed to enter mainland China - by order of the Taiwanese government.

As for Kintetsu "investing" in a Chinese team, if it helps get their trucking, rail lines, etc. business into the Chinese market, they may very well go ahead and just write it off. This is exactly why they keep a team that operates in the red, to further other business relationships.

There are ways for Taiwanese to work on Mainland China -- I know a few Taiwanese businessmen who have manufacturing plants in China.

I am a player who has played pro ball in the States. Anyone know of a agent that can get me connected over there to play? I know several of the players that play there (only through playing against them in the States, like Joe Davenport). I am a 184cm 85kg pitcher who throws between 87-91 sinker, 4 seem fastball, curve (above MLB average), slider, and change.

Any help, please e-mail me at jwall_31 at hotmail dot com

Thank you,
Jason

Jason,

This post is in reference to the Chinese League on Mainland China. Joe Davenport plays for Taiwan's CPBL. Two different countries and two separate leagues.

Do you have an agent? Contact Joe Davenport or someone else who has played in Taiwan and see if their agent can represent you.

I can get you hooked up with a scout for Korean Baseball.

I haven't seen any news of the Mainland China Pro League since Jeffrey Wilson's post on April 8, 2003. Does anyone have any news about this league?

The PRC league has been suspended due to SARS. The league finished its first half, but is waiting for authorization from the National Sports Authority to begin the second half.
