Asians in MLB

Discussion in the Baseball Asia forum
Asians in MLB
Here is an update on some of the Asian baseball players in the major leagues:

Florida Marlins' Hee Seop Choi is off to a great start as he is hitting .288 with 8 home runs and 15 RBIs. It's nice to see the first baseman bounce back from his head injury. Did the Chicago Cubs give up on him too early?

Shingo Takatsu has a 3.86 ERA in 6 games (7 innings) with the Chicago White Sox. The former NPB closer has not been used in any save situations so far however.

Newcomer Kazuo Matsui is off to a slow start, just like Seattle Mariners' Ichiro, who's batting .255 and just hit his first home run of the season. The New York Mets' shortstop is hitting .259 with 2 homers and 8 RBIs. A Seattle radio talkshow host was saying that the league has figured Ichiro out, but he was never figured out in Japan.

San Diego Padres' pitcher, Akinori Otsuka, has a 0.75 ERA in 12 games (11 innings).

Re: Hee Seop Choi

- It seems that the Cubs did give up on him. The Marlins even fixed the loop in his swing, which the Cubs failed to do. Last year he was in a crouch and his swing was loopy. This year, he is more upright and his swing is more direct, utilizing all of his 6'5 240lb frame.

Choi could become a premiere slugger in MLB. I watched him hit his 9th home run into McCovey Cove yesterday. It was mammoth.

Current stats: .295 Avg., 9 HR, 18 RBI, 1.157 OPS

Not too shaby for April!

He should actually be leading the Majors in home runs by now, but Jack McKeon is platooning him with Will Cordero at first base. Choi is quickly proving himself, taking advantage of every opportunity.

9 home runs in April! In limited action! Godzilla who?

Akinori Otsuka is automatic. Hasn't given up a single run since opening day. 0.71 ERA.
