Pro Yakyu Spirits 2

Discussion in the Video Games forum
Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
Konami's Diamondhead development studio made themselves famous with the Jikkyou Powerful Pro Yakyu series, but have had a hard time recreating that magic with their Pro Yakyu Spirits brand. Ever since 2002, Diamondhead have been experimenting with their NTV tie up series, The Baseball. It has to be hard for a development team to see some of their games easily sell over 100,000 units, then see another barely move 20,000 units. Konami looks to end that trend this year.

The series has been trying to find an identity for three years now, and the sales reflect that. In 2004, Konami abruptly ended the tie up with NTV. Some say they messed around with the computer logic and batting system too much. Whatever the problem was, Pro Yakyu Sprits' sales fizzled when compared to the cartoony Pawapuro series. Even Namco, makers of the Netsu Chuu series, edged out Konami in sales of their baseball games last April.

It seems like Konami got the hint, because they've worked hard to make Pro Yakyu Spirits 2 a hybrid of 3D realistic baseball graphics and Pawapuro's award winning gameplay/modes.

They added things such as Senshu Play Mode, where you can play as a single NPB player for entire games. The camera angles and controls change with whatever position your guy plays. They also fixed huge flaws in the pitching system. Last year, it wouldn't be rare to pitch a no hit no run on the toughest difficulty. That looks like it will change this year. They added a new strike zone, weak/strong areas for certain hitters, pitcher specific pitch attributes, etc. Kawakami can throw seven straight fastballs without losing control, but if Darvish tries the same with his screwball, his control will become very poor.

Other new features include...

-Dash catch button on defense
-Three years of Pennant Mode, instead of one
-14,800 words of commentary with four different color analysts
-12 franchise stadiums, including the new Fullcast Stadium
-Over 450 player specific animations
-Dolby Pro Logic II audio with sounds catering to player specific camera angles
-Management commands such as "PR appeal" and cash trades
-Over 100 missions to participate in during Pennant Mode to help develop your team
-Spirits Mode, a card game format create-a-player

Pro Yakyu Spirits 2 releases on 4/7 for 7140 yen.

Hey Zam, nice to finally have this forum, huh?
Pro Yakyu Spirits 2 is gonna be good, and if they fix the homer problem it'll be fantastic.

I'll give Namco a chance too, but overall I'd choose Konami's as better if they'd let you actually hit it out of the park now and then.

Last year they has 3 different types of balls that you could buy with VPs, and two of them were juiced up balls that would travel further. That worked fine in the homerun derby, but not in a game.

Also I wonder if they are going to add more legends to this year's version?

Any recommendations on where to pick this up? I hear NCSX is good. Last year I was in Japan and just bought it at GEO, but I'm in San Diego now.

NCSX is a great website to buy NTSC-J games(Japanese games).

I believe there will be more legends this time around. In addition to the managers for each team, you can unlock all the different coaches.

If you live in the USA, NCSX is about the only way to go. The other stores either won't get the game in stock, will take too long to ship, or just rip you off.

I bought both Pro Yakyu Spirits and Netsu Chu Pro Yakyu 2004 (The fall version), and I prefer the Namco title. Spirits looks great graphic wise, but the gameplay is frustrating; infielders throw the ball too slowly, it's difficult to catch a grounder (and sometimes a fly ball) in the outfield, balls sometimes travel so fast out of the infield that's impossible to catch or field a liner, and the baserunning control is slow and sluggish.

Netsu chu certainly isn't as flashy as Spirits, but the overall feel is good, and it has a good pitching and batting system that caters to all difficulty levels. I played 1 season (128 games I think) and really enjoyed it, especially winning the Triple Crown with Johjima.

Open Sen hands on reports are in. I'm reporting on all information given, so please don't ask me for anymore info. This is all we have for now.

It seems like they fixed the dead balls(beans). Batter can now try to get out the way, and there are animations for this. I guess it happens more often now, since they rarely happened in the 2004 versions.

Konami took a Namco idea and incorporated half swings with checks to base umpires.

Japanese imports for the Xbox really don't exist, because it's an American machine. It's only available for Japanese PS2.

well, if you guys live in own a multi range PS2 or a japanese version the best way to go is "Nechu Pro Yakyu" by NAMCO. i cant read that much jaapnese but, the game is by far the best baseball game i have played since PS1 MLB '99 this game is very nice, a lot of realism into it, you just cant smoke Homers every at bat(even if you are A. Cabrera). anyway i own 2003 and 2004. '04 is much better i can not wait until 2005! WOooooooooo! the only thing is new is cost around 7,000ï¿¥ $65.00US
Just had to add my 2ï¿¥

I felt the same way last year, I thought Netsu Chu was the best game I had played as far as realism, but then I took a chance and played Pro Yakyu Spirits...needless to say, Spirits blew me away and was WAY better than Netsu Chu.

Now, both games have great aspects to them...I love both. And I'll give them both a chance this year.

Has anyone heard of a GC release for this one? I've played Powerful Pro 9 to death on GC because of the game play. I still haven't found a realistic looking game (NPB or MLB)that's gameplay holds up to the Powerful pro series. Hopefully Konami doesn't forget about us Game Cube people.

The only Japanese baseball game available for Gamecube is the Pawapuro series.

Actually, a couple years ago, didn't GameCube have Konami's "The Baseball", which was their precursor to Pro Yakyu Spirits?

Video of the game is up. It's hard to make anything out of it, other than the new animations and player graphics. Personally, I would NEVER swing on an 0-3 count. I'll translate gameplay info when I get time.

Wow! Everything looked and sound great. The hitting looks harder. I still think the players neck look weird. Just look at the coach of the Giants in that video. It looks funny.

"So what you guys are saying is that we won't be able to play these games on the "American" version of the PS2??"

There is no way to play this game on a American PS2. The PS2 prevents someone from playing a game outside of the specified region the system was designed form, which is either NTSC-J(Japan), NTSC-U/C(North America), or PAL(Europe/Australia).

Yes you can play it on a US PS2. Just do a google search for PS2 slide card. mine cost about $30 for the card and the boot disk. It took me about 2 minutes to get set up and I play Pro Yakyu Spirits 2004 all the time. Kills any MLB game.

Here is a site showing previous pictures in high res.

A report has come out of the latest Open Sen at Koshien. The guy says not to worry about the computer batting. It's been fixed. He threw the ball into the middle of the box everytime, and the comp scored 26 runs in one inning on the hardest difficulty. Hopefully, we won't have to worry about the difficulty. He says that the ball stays up in the air a lot longer this time, and homeruns won't be an issue. The computer hit homeruns off of him.

Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 13, 2005 11:26 PM | CLM Fan ]

A little more info.

The difficulty can be tweaked better now, like Pawapuro, so all skill levels can be challenged.

Inaba will not be on the Nippon Ham roster, due to him signing very late.

The new difficulty level called, "SPIRITS" will be tougher than the previous "Perfect" difficulty level.

There is no signing of free agents.
Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 14, 2005 3:48 PM | CLM Fan ]

Some more impressions have come from the Koshien report.

He really liked the new feel of the pitching. The release timing is tougher, and you really have to think about the pitches you throw. If you don't give your all, then the computer will light you up.

Senshu Play Mode was really interesting. When you're on defense, you really appreciate the stadium graphics. He was pretty nervous when trying to field with the new camera angles, but it's probably because he isn't a ballplayer.

Rhodes threw a ball into the crowd after catching a fly ball to end an inning. Also, after making a mistake trying to steal second base, Okada kantoku was shown being very mad in the dugout.

There is supposedly a new fatigue meter for batters that is much like the one for pitchers. It should play a role in Pennant play.

Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 15, 2005 6:12 AM | CLM Fan ]

There should be new info and a new movie on the official site in a few hours, but I just want to point out something I saw. There are a few screenshots that show what the strong and weak zones are all about.

Look at Batista's picture. Notice how his strong areas are high inside and low inside. This means he hits with power to the left. Now look at Shima. His strong and weak areas are only at his knees. His strong area of the strike zone is low and away, because he gets a lot of base hits. He likes slicing the ball to the other side, in addition to hitting homeruns. That is why he doesn't have any weakness on the top part of the strike zone.
Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 15, 2005 6:36 AM | CLM Fan ]

But on a couple pics on this page, Shima's strong area is high and up. He also has no weak areas on those pics. Interesting...
Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 15, 2005 6:41 AM | CLM Fan ]

I just realized on the Kiyohara video, that his weak and strong areas changed during the at bat. Looks like this will add a ton of strategy to batting.
Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 15, 2005 4:00 PM | CLM Fan ]

New info and videos are up on the official site. Akahoshi is shown batting and running during Senshu Play. Also, Araki is shown playing defense for an inning. The only thing I am disappointed about is Akahoshi walking through Matsunaka. Everything else looks fine to me. I would've liked to see the second base umpire yell, "SAFE!" but oh well.

They talked a little about fatigue for all players now. It factors in the players' age, their defense, running, batting, etc. If you sub out a player after around three at bats, fatigue shouldn't build up too much. DHs won't have too many issues with fatigue throughout a season. Guys like Kiyohara should have fatigue issues, though. It looks like it'll add a lot to Pennant Mode, and you'll have to use various guys on your roster.

Historic stats now play a bigger role. A new information bar will come up if one of your players is approaching a big accomplishment. The announcer will say various things, and an event will occur. Take for example, Furuta's 2000th hit that will come soon or Kiyohara's 500th homerun.

There's a new pitch speed between Basic Speed and Real Speed called Middle Speed. This should solve a ton of issues with batting, since I always found one too slow and the other too fast.

Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 16, 2005 1:16 AM | CLM Fan ]

You rule, man. I've been waiting for Tsutaya to put up a video for like two weeks now. Hehe. They usually have them up before the developers. I remember last year, they actually changed the video, because the first was so underwhelming.

It really looks like Konami improved everything that needed to be improved, including the homerun jog. The batting mechanics seem different, too. It seems very similar to Pawapuro now. In fact, it really seems like a "real kei Pawapuro", and these videos are making Japanese fans call it "kami game" or Godly game.

I almost want to win a pennant with Rakuten to see what the celebration will be like.
Re: Pro Yakyu Spirits 2
[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 17, 2005 7:54 PM | CLM Fan ]

I've noticed a few things from that video...

The ball doesn't always pop up to the catcher when you miss with a power hit.

They fixed batting transitions into the stances. They're really smooth now.

Catchers change position depending on the pitch you throw.

The flow of striding into the ball is a lot better. Watch Shima and Akahoshi.

Catchers take off their masks now.

Players definitely react to hits well. Watch the left outfielder during Shinjo's homerun. There seems to be a question mark over him, like in MGS. Also, the pitcher quickly looks back after Pascucci smacks a sayonara grand slam.

The signs and banners in the crowd are improved. Shinjo has a personalized one.

There are multiple celebrations after hitting a homerun.

Two little things I'm happy about are new batting gloves and the reappearance of the mascots. It may seem corny to many, but it's part of what makes Japanese baseball unique.

On that note, here is some news. Konami updated the site today. They uploaded a video of Furuta batting against Iwakuma. There's really nothing new in the video, other than the new information bar. I'll try to translate the new information on player data sometime soon.

Also, here is the commercial that will run on Japanese TV.

I have some news to report. We have another report from a guy who got to test play at a game store. He says he played on normal level difficulty and recorded 6 Ks in a row with Igawa against Rakuten. However, he said the Giants lit up Darvish in another game. Some other info...

-In a simulated pennant, Softbank, Orix, and Nippon Ham finished at the top of the Pacific League. Chunichi won the Central League. This is good news, since Chunichi was very weak for Pro Yakyu Spirits 2004 Climax.
-Bat boys are now in the game.
-Players step on the "Lions mark". I don't follow Seibu, so I don't know what this is.
-Toyoda prays? Once again, I don't follow Seibu.

Funny how Konami doesn't mention Darvish in their young star section, and even took his picture off their Konami Style page.

[ Author: BigManZam | Posted: Mar 26, 2005 5:16 AM | CLM Fan ]

There's been a decent amount of information come out, now that we're a couple weeks away from release. First off, there are videos of Shinjo defending in center field, and Miura taking on Chiba Lotte. It looks like Benny has a new batting stance.

Some TV stations simulated opening day matches using the game. Rakuten beat Lotte 4-0, and Softbank beat Nippon Ham by the same score. Cabrera hit a two run homer in the latter.

Like I said before, personalized banners for players are in the game now. The site shows one for Akahoshi. Johjima can also throw from his knees, as you can see from the Akahoshi base stealing video. Shinjo also has a new motion in which he slides head first to home plate.

Great news has just come out. Famitsu, the world's most prestigious and harshest critic of video games gave Pro Yakyu Spirits 2 a great review.

Between four reviewers rating from 1-10, they gave the game scores of 9, 9, 8, and 9. Famitsu only gives scores like this to the elite of the gaming community like Tekken, Winning Eleven, Mario, various RPGs, etc. This is a very good sign of how much the game has improved.

Re: Memory Card
[ Author: Guest: John Brooks | Posted: Aug 16, 2005 4:24 PM ]

Like said below, official memory cards don't have a regional restriction. All of them work with any console regardless of region.

Though if it's a third-party memory card, some are designed only for a certain region, like the Memory Manager Plus memory card which comes with a CD.

"If I get a Japanese memory card will it save from my US ps2?"

If you get a NTSC-J(Japanese)memory card it will work fine with a US console. Though a regular memory card should work fine with a NTSC U/C console(North American). The only thing I can think of is your memory card might be a third party memory card that is designed only for a certain region with regional restriction.
